Discover Tarragona
Tarragona is one of Catalonia’s most historically rich cities, built on the foundations of the ancient Roman settlement of Tarraco. The city’s archaeological ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean, the Praetorium and Roman Circus, and the ancient city walls that still trace the old town’s perimeter.
Beyond the ruins, Tarragona’s old town offers the Rambla Nova — a tree-lined promenade with cafés and views to the sea — and the medieval Cathedral of Santa Tecla. The city’s Mediterranean beaches are among the best on the Costa Daurada, with long stretches of golden sand just minutes from the centre.
Tarragona is also famous for its castells — the Catalan tradition of building human towers. The city’s teams (colles) are among the best in Catalonia, and during the Santa Tecla festival in September, the main square fills with towers reaching ten people high. It’s one of the most spectacular cultural events in Spain, and a UNESCO Intangible Heritage tradition.
The journey: Barcelona to Tarragona along the coast
The drive from Barcelona to Tarragona heads south on the AP-7 motorway, tracing the Mediterranean coastline. Leaving the city, you pass through the Garraf massif — a stretch of dramatic limestone cliffs that drop to the sea. On a clear day, the views from the elevated motorway are stunning.
Past Sitges, the road enters the Penedès wine region — Catalonia’s cava country. The rolling hills are covered in neat rows of vines, and you’ll see the distinctive farmhouses (masías) scattered across the landscape. This is where most of Spain’s sparkling wine is produced, and we can arrange a winery stop on the way if you’d like.
As you approach Tarragona, the motorway descends to the Costa Daurada — the Golden Coast — named for its long sandy beaches. The final stretch runs past the Francolí river delta before reaching the city. Your chauffeur will drop you at your exact destination — whether that’s a hotel in the old town, the Roman amphitheatre area, or a beachfront restaurant.
Getting to Tarragona: your options compared
Tarragona is accessible by several transport options from Barcelona:
- AVE high-speed train: Barcelona Sants to Camp de Tarragona station in just 32 minutes, from around €10–18. The catch: Camp de Tarragona station is 10 km outside the city centre. You’ll need a taxi or local bus to reach your final destination, adding time and cost.
- Regional train (Rodalies): Takes about 1h 15min to Tarragona city station, which is centrally located. Costs €7–10. A good budget option for solo travellers, but trains can be crowded and offer limited luggage space.
- Rental car: Gives you flexibility to explore the wine region and coast at your own pace. But parking in Tarragona’s old town is difficult, and you’ll want to be free of a car if you plan to visit wineries (tastings and driving don’t mix).
- Private transfer: Door-to-door in about 1h 15min. No station transfers, no parking stress. For groups and families, it’s often cheaper than multiple train tickets plus taxis. And if you want to combine the transfer with a winery stop in Penedès or a detour to a Costa Daurada beach, we can build that into the journey.
Wine country from Tarragona
Tarragona sits at the crossroads of some of Spain’s most exciting wine regions. We regularly arrange transfers that combine the journey with wine country visits:
- Priorat: Just 30 minutes inland from Tarragona, Priorat is one of only two DOCa-classified wine regions in Spain (the other is Rioja). The steep, terraced vineyards produce intense, mineral-driven red wines from old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena. Wineries like Alvaro Palacios, Clos Mogador, and Scala Dei offer tastings by appointment.
- Montsant: The appellation surrounding Priorat, offering excellent wines at more accessible prices. The landscape is equally dramatic — rugged mountains and ancient monasteries. Many wineries here are small, family-run operations that welcome visitors.
- Penedès: Between Barcelona and Tarragona, Penedès is Spain’s cava heartland. Codorníu, Freixenet, and dozens of smaller producers offer tours and tastings. A stop en route is easy to arrange and adds about 45 minutes to your journey.
- Terra Alta: Further south, Terra Alta is an emerging region known for white Garnacha wines. Less tourist-visited, with authentic village wineries and spectacular countryside. Best combined with a longer day trip.

Did you know?
Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre is one of the few in the world where you can still see the Mediterranean from the original spectator seats — the same view gladiators had 2,000 years ago. The city's archaeological ensemble earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000.
