Discover Girona
Girona is one of Catalonia’s most captivating cities, where medieval history meets a vibrant contemporary culture. The city’s Jewish Quarter (El Call) is one of the best-preserved in Europe — a labyrinth of narrow stone streets that dates back to the 12th century and has remained remarkably intact.
The imposing Girona Cathedral, with the widest Gothic nave in the world, dominates the skyline. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise the cathedral steps and surrounding streets, which served as filming locations for Braavos and King’s Landing in seasons five and six.
Girona has also earned a global reputation as a culinary destination. El Celler de Can Roca, run by the three Roca brothers, has been named the world’s best restaurant multiple times. The city’s food scene extends far beyond fine dining — the Rambla de la Llibertat market stalls, local vermouth bars, and neighbourhood restaurants make Girona a food lover’s city at every price point.
The colourful houses lining the River Onyar are Girona’s most photographed view, and the 11th-century Arab Baths offer a quiet, atmospheric retreat. Girona is also a major hub for professional cycling — many World Tour riders train on the roads around the city, and you’ll see cycling cafés and bike shops throughout the old town.
The journey: Barcelona to Girona along the AP-7
The drive from Barcelona to Girona is a straightforward, pleasant ride north on the AP-7 motorway. Leaving Barcelona, you pass through the Vallès plain — an agricultural area backed by the Collserola hills. On a clear day, you can see the distinctive silhouette of Montserrat to the west, Catalonia’s sacred mountain.
The motorway runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast, though set slightly inland. You’ll pass through the Maresme and Selva regions — rolling countryside dotted with farmhouses and small towns. The terrain is gentle, with pine-covered hills gradually giving way to the flat Girona plain as you approach the city.
Unlike the high-speed train, which runs station-to-station (Barcelona Sants to Girona station in 38 minutes), a private transfer takes you directly from your Barcelona address to your exact destination in Girona. No metro ride to Sants, no queuing, no hauling luggage through the station. For families, groups, or anyone with heavy bags, the door-to-door convenience makes the slightly longer journey time worthwhile.
Getting to Girona: your options compared
Girona is well-connected from Barcelona, but each option has trade-offs:
- AVE high-speed train: Barcelona Sants to Girona in 38 minutes, from around €12–20. Fast and cheap — but you need to get to Sants, arrive early, and then travel from Girona station to your final destination. The train is best for solo travellers heading to central Girona with light luggage.
- Regional train (Rodalies/Media Distancia): Takes about 1h 30min, costs €8–12. Cheaper but slower and less comfortable. Runs less frequently and stops at multiple stations.
- Girona-Costa Brava Airport shuttle: If you’re flying into Girona Airport (used by Ryanair), the Barcelona Bus company runs coaches to Barcelona city centre. But there’s no direct connection from Girona Airport to Girona city — you’d need a taxi or local bus from the airport.
- Private transfer: Door-to-door in about 1h 15min. No station transfers, no luggage hauling, no schedules to catch. Particularly valuable for groups (one Van transfer is cheaper than 4–5 train tickets plus taxis at each end), families with children, or anyone connecting to destinations beyond central Girona.
Girona as a gateway: Costa Brava, the Dalí Triangle, and beyond
Many of our clients use Girona as a base for exploring the wider region. We can arrange onward transfers or day trips to:
- Costa Brava: The dramatic coastline north of Barcelona includes Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaqués, and the Illes Medes. These towns are difficult to reach by public transport — narrow coastal roads and infrequent buses make a private transfer the most practical option, especially in summer.
- The Dalí Triangle: The three Salvador Dalí museums — the Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres (40 minutes north of Girona), the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, and the Portlligat house-museum in Cadaqués. We can arrange a full-day circuit visiting all three.
- Besalú: A perfectly preserved medieval village 30 minutes north of Girona, famous for its Romanesque bridge. An easy add-on to a Girona day trip.
- Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO): We provide transfers between Barcelona and Girona Airport — a popular route for Ryanair passengers who want a comfortable ride without the coach.
